The district's Southwest campus will host the Second Annual Chess Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 11. The event is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and about 100 participants throughout the region are expected to compete.
The tournament will have both individual and school team competition. Refreshments will be served.
The highly-esteemed Southeast chess team will represent Varnett. Last April, the team placed ninth out of 44 teams in its division at the 2019 National Junior High Championship in Grapevine, Texas. That tournament attracted roughly 400 schools and 3,500 competitors throughout the country.
Last January, Varnett's Southwest campus hosted its first annual chess tournament involving 42 schools and about 100 participants from the Houston area, Then Southeast fifth-grader Kenyan Navarre won three games, finishing with a third-place trophy in individual honors.
"We are excited to host this event again," said Mr. Lonnie Reynolds, Varnett's athletic director. "Here's another opportunity for our Southeast club to showcase their talents and do better than it did last year."
The chess matches will be held in Southwest campus classrooms after everybody meets in the cafeteria.
