Varnett is applying for nearly $67,000 to reward teachers and campus directors who improve academic students' achievement and growth.
The purpose of the grant, called District Awards for Teacher Excellence (D.A.T.E.), is to allow districts to create or continue a system of awards for educators who demonstrate success in academic achievement.
The state grant would be for the 2010-2011 school year.
At least 60 percent of the money would be to reward teachers and principals. The rest would be used for stipends for educators as well as for professional training.
Writing the grant proposal are educators Dianne Blackmon from the Northeast campus, Yolanda Bandoquillo from the East campus and Gayle Voltz from the Southwest campus.
