Field Day promises to be an Olympic-style event

The Cinco de Mayo celebration was a huge hit at the Southwest Campus so what is Varnett doing for an encore?

Field Day on Friday, May 21, promises to be even bigger.

The Southwest Campus area is expected to be packed with students, parents, staff and volunteers during a day of music, games, refreshments and fun field competition. “This is Superintendent Cluff’s way of giving back to the parents who have shown support throughout the school year and showing the community that Varnett is a good school,” said Greta Peacock, the district’s curriculum coordinator. “She does take care of her students."

The event, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., is free and students and their parents from the Northeast and East campuses will have bus service to Southwest.

The activities include the 10-yard dash, soccer, basketball, hula hoop marathon, long jump, water relay race, bunny hop race and more. Imagine watching the Olympics but it’s tailored toward elementary school children, Ms. Peacock said. Staff spent Monday assembling the bleachers.

A DJ will be a featured guest for music and dance.

Students may wear jeans or appropriate length shorts while the adult guests are asked to dress appropriately. Students also may wear hats, caps and visors and are encouraged to wear sun block. The forecast for Friday calls for a high of 90 degrees and a low of 72, with a 10 percent chance of precipitation.

So on Friday, Let the Games Begin!
