The Varnett cheer teams from the Southwest and Northeast campuses made a special showing at the 45th Annual Original MLK Parade Monday, January 16, 2023.
The parade, which started at the intersection of Smith and Lamar streets in downtown Houston, featured Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner as the grand marshal.
The Southwest Eagles had 36 members and the Northeast Mustangs had 24 members, plus their hard-working coaches who spent hours and hours practicing for the special event to honor civil rights icon The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Members of the Southwest Royal Court also participated.
Varnett's participation in the parade has become an annual event, with the cheer teams from each campus earning well-deserved applause from the throng of onlookers.
Kudos to the Southwest cheer coaches, Ms. Francesca Mims and Ms. Dedra Glasco, and the Northeast coaches, Ms. Amber Green, Ms. Latunya Chaney and Ms. Lajuana Short.
