Spirited K-2 spelling bee showcases language preparation and public speaking

The Varnett Public School's Academics Department hosted a K-2 district spelling bee on April 14, with three finalists each from the East, Southwest/Early Childhood Center and Northeast campuses.

The competition was grouped by grades, meaning there were nine participants in all.

Kindergarten students spelled 57 words before a winner was declared, first graders went through 80 words and second graders topped out at 35 words.

The districtwide spelling bee is an annual event. According to Academy
of Accelerated Learning, Inc., the benefits of spelling bees extend beyond language. Since children are required to spell words while on stage, kids also develop self-confidence, communication and public speaking skills, and the ability to thrive under pressure.

In addition to those in attendance, the competition was viewed virtually by educators and students throughout the district.
