Schools chief reads children's book to second graders

Varnett's superintendent, Dr. Margaret Stroud, took time from her schedule to read "The Snowy Day" to East Campus second-graders. The 1962 picture book by American author and illustrator Ezra Jack Keats conveys the silent wonder of a city snowfall and a small boy's delight in it. The half-hour session was in recognition of National Young Readers Week.

Since 1989, National Young Readers Week has been an annual event held during the second week of November to raise awareness around the importance of reading. Dr. Stroud, who has been emphasizing the importance of reading and comprehension, asked the students several questions as she flipped through the pages.

East Campus had a special daily reading exercise for this week. Ms. Voltz, the campus director, wore pajamas during the "Principal in Pajamas Reading Marathon."
