Cheerleaders from Varnett Public School Southwest earned a third-place trophy Saturday, April 28, in the Ultimate Blast Cheer Competition at Butler Field House.
Competing in the Elementary Division, the students’ 2 minute, 30-second routine consisted of cheer motions, jumps, stunts and dance. The cheerleaders had two months to prepare for this competition, while their counterparts had been practicing since August.
“I am extremely proud of each and every one of them,” said Ms. Monique Thornton, a fourth-grade teacher. Ms. Thornton and Ms. Dedra Glasco, an instructional facilitator, coach the 16-member team.
“Most teams start off at camp in the fall and enter many competitions throughout the year,” Ms. Thornton said. “This was an experience we will never forget. Building memories and having fun is what it’s about. We also received many compliments on how well the girls conducted themselves.”

The Varnett Public School - under the direction of Dr. Margaret Stroud, the superintendent, and Mr. Lonnie Reynolds, the district athletic director - established several after-school enrichment programs this year. The activities include cheerleading, dance, soccer, basketball and chess.
Congratulations to the Southwest campus cheerleading team!
