Varnett to participate in "Original" MLK parade

Nearly 100 Varnett cheerleaders and dancers will participate in Monday's 41st Annual "Original" MLK, Jr. Birthday Parade, which runs from 10 a.m. to noon. The participants will come from Southwest and Southeast campuses, and the Early Childhood Center.

U.S. Rep. John Lewis, a civil rights icon, and George Springer, Astros outfielder and 2017 World Series MVP, will serve as grand marshals. The parade, in honor of the late Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.,  will start in downtown Houston at Smith and Lamar, which is adjacent to City Hall. Varnett schools will be closed in observance of the federal holiday.

Monday's forecast calls for high of 67 and a low of 60. We hope to see our Varnett families at the event.
